WHAT IS APPENDIX?
The appendix is a narrow ,small finger shaped portion of the large intestine that is considered as vestigeal organ in humans.
WHAT IS APPENDICITIS ?
It is inflammation of the appendix which if not treated can burst causing spread of infection in whole abdomen which increases the morbidity and sometimes mortality of the patient.Generally it is caused due to blockage of the opening of appendix by hard stool fragement.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF APPENDICITIS ?
1). Severe abdominal pain mainly localized to right lower side
2). Fever
3). Nausea and vomitting
If you have any of above symptoms see your doctor immediately. Some investigations will be done : blood , urine and ultrasound to confirm the clinical diagnosis.
HOW IS APPENDICITIS TREATED ?
The best treatment of Appendicitis is surgical removal . Mild appendicitis may sometimes be cured with antibiotics but at the discretion of the treating Doctor.
WHAT ARE THE SURGICAL OPTIONS FOR APPENDECTOMY ?
Traditionally the appendix is removed through an incision in the right lower abdominal wall which is about 2 inch -3 inch in size. Nowadays in most cases Laproscopic Appendectomy is done in which 3 small incisions are made on the abdomen through which Laproscopic instruments are inserted and an enlarged image is viewed on television monitor.
ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR LAPROSCOPIC APPENDECTOMY ?
Although Laproscopic Appendectomy has many benefits, it may not be appropriate for some patients. Early non ruptured appendix can be removed laproscopically . But, laproscopic removal of appendix is difficult to peform if appendix has ruptured or there is advanced infection causing adhesions. Also patients with previous lower abdomen surgery and obese patients it may be difficult to perform.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF LAPROSCOPIC APPENDECTOMY ?
1). Lesser post operative pain
2). Shorter hospital stay
3). Better cosmetic result
4). Quicker result to normal activity
HOW LONG IS THE HOSPITAL STAY?
In most cases the patient can be discharged within 24 to 36 hours. By contrast . the hospital stay is typically two or three days for an open surgery
Laproscopic Appendectomy along with other laproscopic surgeries is routinely performed in our centre by Dr N.S Sandhu and in his absence by other surgeons on call like Dr Col R.K Sharma.
