Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy involves placement of a feeding tube using endoscope through the anterior abdominal wall into the stomach. This is extremely useful for patients of stroke, who require prolonged feeding but cannot swallow without aspirating. The issue of parenteral vs enteral feeds is long settled however unfortunately hospitals still prefer to keep patients hospitalized on IV fluids etc. PEG provides long term solution for feeding in bedridden patients. Earlier gastrostomy was done by doing a formal laprotomy under anesthesia. Now the patient can get it done at our centre as an OPD procedure.
